Ordering a custom hydraulic cylinder is not like buying a standard off-the-shelf unit. For large custom cylinders used in dump trucks, garbage trucks, construction machinery, and agricultural machinery, missing even one key parameter can delay production, increase costs, or result in a cylinder that does not fit. 1. Retracted and extended center-to-center length
This is the distance between the two mounting pin centers with the cylinder fully retracted, and again with it fully extended. Many buyers only provide stroke, but stroke alone does not tell us whether the cylinder will fit your machine. We need both retracted and extended lengths to confirm mounting envelope.
2. Rated working pressure
Tell us your system pressure in bar or psi. Also mention any pressure spikes or shock loads. For dump truck lift cylinders, peak pressure during initial lift can be significantly higher than steady-state pressure. We design large custom cylinders for your actual peak pressure, not just the nominal system pressure.
3. Bore diameter and rod diameter
Bore diameter determines推力. Rod diameter determines column strength (resistance to bending). For long-stroke applications, a larger rod diameter may be required even if thrust needs are modest. For construction machinery cylinders that see side loads, we sometimes recommend oversized rods.
4. Stroke length
Stroke is the distance the rod travels from fully retracted to fully extended. This seems simple, but be careful—stroke plus rod length must fit within the retracted length. We will check this for you, but providing accurate stroke data avoids back-and-forth.
5. Mounting style and dimensions
Trunnion, flange, or foot? Provide specific dimensions: trunnion pin diameter and pin location (from the rod end or cap end), flange bolt pattern and pilot diameter, or foot mounting hole positions and bracket width. For garbage truck cylinders, mounting细节 often determines whether the cylinder clears other chassis components.
6. Operating temperature range
Minimum and maximum ambient temperature, plus any heat generated by the application. Temperature affects seal material selection, oil viscosity, and piston-to-tube clearance. For agricultural machinery cylinders that operate in freezing winters and hot summers, we need the full range. We use premium seals rated for your actual temperature extremes.
7. Port type, size, and location
Specify port thread type (NPT, BSPP, SAE, Metric), port size, and exactly where ports should be located on the cylinder. Port location measured from the end cap or from the rod end cap. Incorrect port location is one of the most common custom cylinder errors. We always confirm port drawings before manufacturing.
8. Corrosion protection and surface finish requirement
Tell us about your operating environment. Indoors? Outdoor exposed to rain? Road salt? Chemical washdown? Coastal salt spray? Based on your answer, we recommend the appropriate rod coating (hard chrome, nickel-chrome, stainless steel, or ceramic) and exterior paint system. For garbage truck cylinders that see daily waste exposure, we often recommend upgraded corrosion protection beyond standard paint.
Bonus parameters worth providing
Cycle frequency (cycles per hour or per day). Expected service life in years. Whether the cylinder must interchange with another brand. Any space constraints beyond the main mounting dimensions. Photos or drawings of the existing cylinder are always helpful.
