For dump truck cylinders, garbage truck cylinders, construction machinery cylinders, and agricultural machinery cylinders, unplanned downtime is expensive. Most major failures don’t happen suddenly—they give warning signs. Learning to recognize these seven common failure modes early can save you from catastrophic breakdowns and costly repairs. This is especially important for large custom cylinders, where replacement lead times can be long. At our facility, we build every cylinder with premium components throughout—from seals to rods to bolts—but even the best cylinder needs proper inspection.

Rod bending
Rod bending typically occurs when a cylinder is subjected to side loading beyond its design limits. This is common in dump truck lift cylinders that are slightly misaligned or in construction machinery cylinders operating on uneven terrain. Early signs include uneven wear on the rod surface, difficulty extending or retracting smoothly, and visible bowing when the rod is fully extended. Using high-strength rod material and properly sized rods in large custom cylinders reduces bending risk, but alignment checks remain essential.
Internal leakage
Internal leakage happens when oil bypasses the piston seal. The cylinder may still extend and retract, but performance degrades. Classic symptoms include the cylinder slowly creeping downward under a sustained load, reduced lifting capacity, and higher than normal operating temperatures. For garbage truck cylinders that must hold a lifted bin securely, internal leakage is a serious safety hazard. Our piston seals are selected from premium global suppliers, but regular pressure drop testing is still the best way to catch internal leakage early.
External leakage
External leakage is the most visible failure mode. Oil seeps past the rod seal or through damaged end cap connections. You will notice oil film on the rod, drips on the ground, or a gradual drop in the hydraulic oil reservoir level. For agricultural machinery cylinders working in fields, external leakage wastes oil and contaminates soil. High-quality rod seals with double-lip designs provide better oil containment. A simple paper test—wiping the rod with clean white paper—can reveal early seal degradation before dripping begins.
Scored cylinder tube
Scoring occurs when contaminants or metal particles scratch the internal surface of the cylinder tube. The main causes are failed wiper seals, contaminated hydraulic oil, or worn wear rings. Symptoms include erratic cylinder movement, unusual grinding or squealing noises, and visible scratches if you can inspect the tube interior. Construction machinery cylinders and dump truck cylinders working in dusty environments are most at risk. Once the tube is scored, the only reliable fix is honing or replacement. Prevention—through high-quality wiper seals and clean oil—is far cheaper than repair.
Damaged rod coating
The coating on the piston rod protects against corrosion and wear. Damage occurs from impact, abrasive material buildup, or exposure to corrosive chemicals. Look for rust spots, peeling, or deep scratches. For garbage truck cylinders that operate near corrosive waste and moisture, rod coating damage leads to rapid seal failure as rust eats into the rod surface. Broken end cap bolts
End cap bolts hold the cylinder together under pressure. They fail due to overtightening, fatigue from pressure cycling, or shock loads exceeding design limits. Warning signs include oil seeping around the end cap joint, a visible gap between the cap and tube, or bolts that feel loose during manual torque checks. In construction machinery cylinders subjected to heavy impact, bolt failure can cause sudden and violent separation. We use high-strength graded bolts on all our cylinders. Regular torque checks using a marked bolt method can catch loose bolts before failure.
Cushion failure
Cushions are designed to slow the piston before it hits the end cap at full speed. When cushions fail—usually due to worn cushion sleeves, broken cushion needles, or contaminated oil—the piston slams into the end cap with a loud bang. You will hear a metallic impact sound at the end of each stroke. Over time, this damages the end cap and piston. For large custom cylinders with long strokes and high speeds, cushion function is critical. Regular inspection of cushion components during seal replacement prevents this failure.
