Among all cylinder parts, seals are the most inconspicuous yet the most likely to cause failures. Industry statistics show that over 70% of external leakage issues stem from incorrect seal material selection or overdue service life. Imported seals offer advantages in material purity, mold precision, and durability that are difficult for standard domestic seals to match.

How to choose seal materials? It depends on your working conditions

 

Different seal materials vary significantly in temperature resistance, wear resistance, and chemical compatibility. The imported polyurethane seals we use feature material formulations validated through decades of real-world applications. Their extrusion resistance and wear resistance far exceed industry standards, making them ideal for dump truck lift cylinders and various construction machinery cylinders. If you have ever seen a dump truck frequently lifting its bed on a job site, you will understand why high-quality imported polyurethane seals are the first choice for such vehicles.

Our imported nitrile rubber seals offer excellent oil resistance, good low-temperature elasticity, and relatively controllable costs. They are typically suitable for standard-duty agricultural machinery cylinders or general applications on garbage truck cylinders. When ambient temperatures consistently exceed 150°C—for example, in certain continuously operating large cylinders or construction machinery in hot regions—we recommend imported fluorocarbon (FKM) seals. Imported FKM seals reliably withstand temperatures above 200°C and offer exceptional chemical resistance. They are more expensive, but considering the replacement cost and downtime of a large custom cylinder, the investment is well justified.

We also offer imported PTFE seal materials, which feature extremely low friction coefficients and outstanding corrosion resistance. These are typically used in high-speed reciprocating motion or special-media large custom cylinder applications. Imported PTFE offers higher purity and surface finish. When combined with specialized elastomeric energizers, it achieves an optimal balance between ultra-low friction and near-zero leakage.

Four types of seals, each with a distinct role

Many people think a hydraulic cylinder contains only one type of seal. In reality, a well-designed cylinder uses at least four different types of seals—and Eternal Hydraulic uses imported components for every single one to ensure each sealing interface achieves its intended service life.

The piston seal is the largest seal. Its job is to prevent high-pressure oil from bypassing the piston from one side to the other. Imported piston seals feature better profile design and material resilience, maintaining good contact even after long-term high-pressure cycling. If this seal fails, the cylinder develops internal leakage—typically slower lifting speed or the piston rod slowly retracting on its own under load.

The rod seal does the opposite: it prevents oil from leaking out of the cylinder along the piston rod. Imported rod seals often use a double-lip design that effectively contains oil without generating excessive friction.

The wiper seal (or dust seal) is mounted outside the rod seal. Its task is to scrape off dust, mud, and moisture from the rod surface as the rod retracts.

The wear ring (or guide ring) is not strictly a seal, but it plays a critical role in protecting the sealing system.

When should you replace seals?

Many users wait until the cylinder is visibly leaking before taking action—an approach that is actually the most expensive in the long run. Even imported seals have a finite service life. A more rational approach is to establish a preventive replacement schedule based on operating conditions.

For frequently used dump truck cylinders and garbage truck cylinders, we recommend inspecting and replacing the complete seal kit every ten to fourteen months, or approximately every 12,000 lift cycles.

Identifying early signs of seal degradation is far more cost-effective than waiting for complete failure. The reason we insist on using imported seals is not brand superstition, but because in real-world applications across dump trucks, garbage trucks, construction machinery, agricultural machinery, and large custom cylinders, imported seals deliver longer service life, lower failure rates, and more reliable operational safety.
